Mal Hope is an illustrator and fiber artist living in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Combining dynamic imagery with abstraction, her illustrations are pronounced by bold splashes of inks contrasting with meticulous lines. In addition to traditional drawing methods, Mal developed her own approach to “illustrating” on textiles using a unique combination of batik and sewing techniques.

Employing the phrase “socially institutionalized phenomenon”, Mal enjoys challenging cultural norms, often implying in her own work that not everything is what it may seem. Her childhood serves as a source of such inspiration, observing the paradox of being raised in the deep South whilst simultaneously defying the social stereotypes associated with the region. Mythology, figurative anatomy, social justice, and tropical wildlife are just a handful of many themes which continue to inspire Mal’s work today.
